When did people start driving cars?

Yesterday as I pulled into my driveway I noticed again how small my driveway is compared to modern homes.  In fact, I once broke my rear view mirror from driving to close to the bush by the driveway.  I told my son, "Don't tell daddy!"  He marched right into the house and said, "Mommy ran into the bush and broke the mirror!"

When my son asks why our driveway is so small, I have to explain how when our house was built in 1916 people didn't have fuel gas cars like they do now.  I decided to do a wiki search about when people started driving cars, this is what I found:

Steam cars- 1769
Fuel gas cars- 1805
Gasoline cars- 1885
