Harbor House Inn, located in Elk, CA

The Harbor House Inn was the inspiration for our old bungalow.  This inn is set in a landmark 1916 Craftsman-style house on the edge of the Pacific Ocean.  This inn is flanked by redwoods and is off the Shoreline Highway and is a 10 minute walk from Greenwood State Beach.

East Bay Provisions Cafe in the Claremont Club and Spa

The Provisions Cafe bakes their croissants in a cast iron oven from France.  There are wood floors, a beautiful view and is super cozy!

Summer of love tour

I am planning a summer of love tour for family visiting from out of town!  I will be adding to my sites but here are a few of my favorites!

Summer of Love Bay Area Self Tour

Packing List:

Picnic with baguettes and butter, fruit, and wine, meat, cheese.

bubbles

ladies wear flowers in your hair!

tie dye everything

I.  North Beach-

The first stop is the City Lights Bookstore owned and operated by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti.  City Lights was at the center of the San Francisco Beat scene, where many famous Beat Generation poems were published and read, including the epic Allen Ginsberg poem, "Howl."  Next door is Vesuvio's, where Beatnick writers like Jack Kerouac and Kenneth Rexroth hung out!

II.  Market Street-

Fillmore Dance Hall is famous for  legends like Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana, and the Grateful Dead make their names in San Francisco.

III.  Haight Ashbury-

This area is the center of the radiance of the 60's peace and love movement.

At that time, you could rent in a Victorian home for between $100-300 a month.

For virtual tours of the beautiful victorian homes in San Francisco, see tourvictorians.com.

IV.  UC Berkeley

Rallies, marches and protests in 1967

Playlist:

Grateful Dead, "Don't Ease Me In."

Beatles film, "Hard Days Night."

Janis Joplin, "Ball and Chain." Monterey Pop Festival

Scott McKenzie, "Flowers In Your Hair."  This song is one of my favorites, it was written by John Phillips and sung by Scott McKenzie was produced and released in 1967.  They used it to promote the Monterey International Pop music Festival.

The Claremont Club and Spa

"The Claremont is one of the few hotels in the world with warmth, character, and charm."

-Frank Lloyd Wright

"The Claremont is a manifestation of Westward Vision- and a lot of Forty-Nine gold.  The claremont is the living bridge from the Gold Rush to Tech Boom and the safe observer of Social Movements, Literary Shifts and American Dreams.  It's Buddha-like pose amidst the Berkeley hills as America's Top Urban Resort will not soon be lacking in inspiration or interpretation."

-Brantly Martin, August 2016

"When the Claremont opened, Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla were still perfecting -and squabbling over - electricity back on the East Coast.  In Berkeley, the architect Leola Hall was busy building homes in her unique Craftsman style that would go on to define the area- while in her spare time fighting for women's rights to vote.  Today the Claremont lights up at night as a reminder of, and mirror into, America's progress and innovation- one often spearheaded by the East Bay over the last 100 years."

Claremont Club & Spa, A Fairmont Hotel

Greyhouse Books

History:  The Claremont Hotel opened in 1915.  The hotel was designed by architects, Charles W. Dickey and Walter Reed.  Dickey was an Alameda native who operated an architectural firm in Oakland and is affiliated with famed San Francisco architects Reid and Reid.  (See historic hotels.org for more information about this hotel and other historic hotels.)

The guests at the Claremont Hotel and Spa and order a beautiful picnic basket filled with yummy food for around $85.00 so they can explore the nearby hiking areas! This is just one example of the special touches that the Claremont adds to make this an old bungalow favorite hotel to recommend!

The croissants in the Commissary are cooked in a German cast iron oven!

They have a theme this summer, "Summer of Love," with fun events planned.  They have an old VW bus in the parking lot as a mascot, and beautiful murals!
